How to Turn off AirPods

Updated: Nov 4, 2022

iPhone 7 Plus Slide to power off screen

You might be thinking of turning off your AirPods to conserve battery or simply to take care of the battery health of your AirPods. Well, here’s the thing, your AirPods are not designed to be turned off. They’re specifically designed to be on the go. Wear them and they play, take them off and they’re paused. Yes, they’re only paused when you take them off and place them in your charging case as you can’t turn your AirPods off. Well, how about how to turn off AirPods case? Nope. There is also no way to turn off your charging case. But you can still conserve your battery life but it will be done in some other way.

How to Conserve the Battery of Your AirPods

Since we cannot turn off our AirPods Pro or AirPods, the best we can do is conserve their battery. Here are some tips on how to turn off AirPods Max, and all the other AirPod models to tone down battery consumption:

Enable Low-Power Mode

This may sound technical but it’s as easy as ABCs. Simply place your AirPods (all gen) or AirPods Pro in their charging case and they will automatically enter low-power mode and even start charging making energy consumption less. Of course, Apple designed the AirPods to be energy-efficient, and putting them back in their charging case conserves battery. Moreso, they recharge once they’re inside.

For AirPods Max, place it on a flat surface, headphones facing down, for at least five minutes. Your AirPods Max will enter power-saving mode as it realizes it’s not being used. It also enables low-power mode when placed in its Smart Case.

Follow these steps to hack your way on how to turn off AirPods.

How about battery health

You might be concerned about overcharging. Don’t worry, your charging case stops recharging your AirPods once your batteries are fully charged.

Use One AirPod at a Time

You don’t need to wear both AirPods for them to work. If you’re multitasking or simply using your AirPod for a quick call, you may opt to use one AirPod to let one rest. This gives you another AirPod to rely on when the other one runs out of battery. This hack also doubles up the time you can use your AirPods with a single charge.

Enable Automatic Ear Detection

Automatic Ear Detection is turned on by default, but if you want to make sure or maybe you turned it off once and wanted to turn it on again, here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Tap on Bluetooth

  3. Select AirPods

  4. Toggle Automatic Ear Detection on

Turning this on helps you conserve battery by automatically pausing your music once the AirPods detect that it’s been out of your ear.

Turn Active Noise Cancellation Off

For AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, it helps conserve battery when you deactivate ANC. Although, it would be contradictory if you bought these versions for ANC and you’re going to turn them off for battery conservation. Nonetheless, here’s how to turn ANC off:

  1. Wear your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max

  2. Go to Control Center

  3. Touch and Hold the Volume Slider until you see additional controls

  4. Tap on the Noise Control icon in the lower-left corner

  5. Tap Noise Cancellation, Off, and Transparency

  6. Select Off to disable both Noise Cancellation and Transparency.

Final Thoughts

You cannot turn your AirPods off but if you want them to conserve energy, you may simply place them back in their cases to enable low-power mode, use one AirPod at a time, turn automatic ear detection and turn ANC off. The AirPods are programmed to be on the go so it’s not possible to turn them off but they conserve energy when they’re back on their cases and even recharge. Don’t worry about the battery health too because the charging case stops charging once it gets the signal that the AirPods are fully charged.
