How to Mute AirPods

Updated: Nov 8, 2022

AirPods are a great way to go when you have a call, while video-conferencing, or listening to seminars. During these times, you may need to mute your AirPods so that the noise coming from your end wouldn’t interfere with the person or lecture coming in from the other end. It would’ve been great if there was a mute command in the force sensor; however, there’s none. Good thing, we found an answer on how to mute AirPods.

How to Mute AirPods by Tapping

Sad to say, you cannot mute your AirPods by tapping. The tap functions support, answering and ending calls, skipping, pausing, and playing music, and activating or deactivating ANC and transparency for the AirPods Pro. Therefore, this has become one of the common complaints of AirPods users. It’s difficult for those who use AirPods for business not to have a tapping function to mute the AirPods. The common way is to tap on the microphone button which usually needs us to unlock our devices, go to the active app, and mute it manually there. Again, there is no physical button on your wearable to mute your AirPods.

In most cases, you have to unlock your device and go to the active app. Tap the microphone button, when there’s a slash on the button, your AirPods are now muted. We’ve looked into how to mute AirPods depending on the app. Here are some of them:

How to Mute AirPods While On-Call

During a call, you may simply tap on the active call (even on the lock screen) to bring you to the window where you can tap the mute button.

How to Mute AirPods on Zoom

If you haven’t paired your AirPods with your device just yet. Start by pairing your device to your AirPods. When pairing, make sure to set to Use AirPods (Hands-Free) in your Zoom settings. Now, to mute, tap on the microphone icon in your Zoom app which is usually at the bottom of the screen. To unmute, tap on the same mic button.

How to Mute AirPods on Microsoft Teams

In Microsoft Teams, you need to open the app and click on the microphone icon within the Teams window. To unmute yourself, press and hold Ctrl + Spacebar on a PC, or Option + Spacebar on a Mac.

How to Mute AirPods Pro

The AirPods Pro also doesn’t have a mute button or shortcut, but it has noise-canceling features which may already be enough for many. To turn it on, wear both AirPods then press and hold the force sensor. This lets you switch from ANC, Transparency, or Off, select ANC. Alternatively, you may turn your ANC on through your device. Is It Possible to Mute AirPods

Yes but not through tapping or pressing the force sensor. You must go to the active app and tap on mute. Sometimes when your phone is locked, the app with an active call shows at the top of the screen, simply tap it to head to the screen where you can tap the mute button.
