How to Connect AirPods to Oculus Quest 2

Updated: Nov 8, 2022

The Oculus Quest 2 is out and we are excited to try it out! Well, preferably with so much ease so we can immerse ourselves in virtual reality. We heard that the Oculus Quest 2 came out with improved graphics and resolution than its predecessor - the Oculus Quest. With that, it would be great to have an immersive experience as ambient sounds get canceled. Also, especially when playing games, wire-free earbuds would be perfect to do away with entanglements and move your hands freely. That is why we give you this quick guide on how to connect AirPods to Oculus Quest 2.

How to connect AirPods to Oculus Quest 2

The AirPods are of great help for an immersive and cable-free gaming experience. And yes, you may connect your AirPods to your Oculus Quest 2 through a Bluetooth connection. Here’s how to connect your AirPods to Oculus Quest 2:

  1. Turn on Oculus Quest 2 located near the battery and Wi-Fi indicators.

  2. At the sidebar, select Settings.

  3. Choose Experimental Features.

  4. Now, make sure your AirPods are charged and stored in their charging case. Press and hold the pairing button located at the rear of the case.

  5. Bluetooth pairing can be enabled by selecting Pair in your Oculus Quest 2.

  6. Wait for 30 seconds to a minute for the Ready to connect notification.

  7. Then, select Pair new device.

Your device should now be connected to your AirPods. If it fails to pair, just re-do the steps. Some are asking about how to connect AirPods Pro to Oculus Quest 2, or how to connect AirPods Max to Oculus Quest 2. Well, both devices may be paired through Bluetooth pairing as well and would need to follow the same steps. The pairing button of the AirPods Pro can be seen at the rear of the charging case, while the pairing button of the AirPods Max is the noise control button. You need to press and hold the noise control button of the AirPods Max until the light flashes white to enable pairing.

Latency Issues with the AirPods and the Oculus Quest 2

You may experience some delay in the audio of your AirPods depending on the usage of the Oculus Quest 2. The Oculus Quest 2 uses Qualcomm Fastconnect 6800 for Bluetooth which is not that high of a processor and is missing the AptX Low Latency implementation. This may cause a delay in the audio or even lag in the whole game. Watching videos are not affected by these latency issues as the device need not process a lot so you can watch movies with real-time audio.

A quick go-around for such latency issues is an external Bluetooth transmitter plugged into the Oculus Quest 2’s audio jack. Make sure to get a transmitter that supports at least Bluetooth 4.3 and should at least have a 10m range.

Tips When Connecting the AirPods to the Oculus Quest 2

Here are some tips before you connect your AirPods to your Oculus Quest 2.

  1. Make sure your devices are close by and have no obstacles to limit their connection.

  2. Charge your AirPods with at least 60% battery to establish signals coming in from the Oculus Quest 2.

  3. Make sure your AirPods aren’t paired with any other device before pairing it with your Oculus Quest 2.

And there you have it, keep our tips handy and follow our step-by-step guide on how to connect AirPods to Oculus Quest 2 to successfully pair both devices and have an immersive, wire-free gaming or movie experience.
